Edwin Carter 1875 Museum - 111North Ridge Street. Tour Edwin Carter’s 1875 museum. Known as the “log cabin naturalist” Edwin Carter came to Breckenridge as a miner during the gold rush. He quickly recognized the impact of mining on the local wildlife and dedicated his life to preservation. The museum was his home and workshop, and contains specimens from his collection, which became one of the foundations for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 1-4 p.m., 111 North Ridge St., free of charge. 970 453-9022
Iowa Hill Hydraulic Mine - Airport Road (approximately .9 miles off of Park Avenue). Park at the trailhead and follow the interpretive signs that guide visitors on a moderate one-mile loop through the park. The signs describe the hydraulic process that was used by miners to extract rich gold from the gulches. The park contains many remnants of the operation as well as a miner’s boardinghouse. 970-453-3160.
Rotary Snowplow Park - Boreas Pass Rd at French St. This Park commemorates the activity and role of the railroad that served early Breckenridge. The Park contains a Rotary Snowplow, boxcars, and a restored steam engine. A restored interpretive cabin filled with railroad photos and artifacts is open during the summer. The Park also contains picnic tables and a short nature hike. 970-453-9022.
Valley Brook Cemetery - Airport Road at Valley Brook. The historic Victorian cemetery dates back to 1882. The preserved gravestones and ornate iron gates contains some of the earliest art and written history in the Breckenridge. A prominent entry gateway symbolizes the “earthly gate to paradise” and provides a separation from the outside world. It is a park-like setting and a notable wildlife and bird sanctuary. Visitors are asked to be considerate as the cemetery is still an active burial ground for the Town and the individual fences and gravestones are fragile artifacts that memorialize loved ones. 970-547-3112.
